This historic ketubah is based on several medieval motifs taken from Hebrew illuminated manuscripts. The pillars and upper motifs were taken from a 13th century mahzor (prayer book) found in Southern Germany. The treatment of the word ketubah in Hebrew in the center of the arch is based on an Italian Book of Psalms while the red filigree comes from a 15th century bible found in Barcelona, Spain. The top panel contains traditional symbols of Jewish life used today and in medieval times. The ketubah is rich in colour, symbolism and history.
